It’s a very long time since my first pint. Longer. perhaps, than it should be..
Back then, the beer world was very different. National brewers dominated, micros scarcely existed, never mind craft beer, and the best bet for a decent pint was generally one of the long-established family brewers. CAMRA was relatively new, and in some areas dominated by the Nationals, the only real ale was from… Guinness, of all people, in the form of bottle-conditioned Extra Stout. Variety was very lacking in some areas, for sure, but many people drank real ale because, well, that’s what people drank.
